Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) play an essential role in immunology research. Three publications recently featured PBMC from Astarte Biologics to study a Zika virus vaccine and T cell immunotherapy methods.

A DNA Vaccine Protects Human Immune Cells against Zika Virus Infection in Humanized Mice

Guohua et al. found that a Zika virus vaccine elicited protective neutralizing antibodies in humanized DRAG mice. These results indicate the vaccine is also very likely to produce a similar response when given to humans.

Natural Killer T Cell-Targeted Immunotherapy Mediating Long-term Memory Responses and Strong Antitumor Activity

In a recent study, Dashtsoodol et al. developed a natural killer T cell-targeted immunotherapy that engaged the patient’s immune system, instead of targeting tumor cells directly.  This therapy showed promising results, including long-term T cell memory responses and superior antitumor responses.

Dang et al. found that reducing myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) while activating T cells, may enhance other cancer immunotherapy methods by improving the antitumor effects of the adaptive immune response.
